THE STORY OF “RENT”

“Rent” was originally conceived by Billy Aronson in 1988.  Mr. Aronson sought a collaborator and was introduced to Jonathan Larson.  By 1991, Mr. Larson asked for and received permission from Mr. Aronson to continue as a solo project. The New York Theatre Workshop presented a staged reading in 1993, which led to workshop production one year later.  Selling out the entire and extended run precipitated a move to the Nederlander Theatre on April 29, 1996.  The Broadway run was closed on September 7, 2008.  Tours continue to fill theatres around the world.

The original Broadway cast of Rent:
Mark Cohen: Anthony Rapp
Roger Davis: Adam Pascal
Mimi Márquez: Daphne Rubin-Vega
Tom Collins: Jesse L. Martin
Angel Dumott Schunard: Wilson Jermaine Heredia
Maureen Johnson: Idina Menzel
Joanne Jefferson: Fredi Walker
Benjamin Coffin III: Taye Diggs

Who is Jonathan Larson?

Born February 4, 1960 in Mt. Vernon, NY.  He played trumpet and tuba in high school as well as piano.  For a time, Mr. Larson also played piano for Barn Theatre’s (Augusta, MI) summer stock program.   After graduating from Adelphi University, he lived in a cramped Greenwich Village apartment with no heat and a bathtub in the kitchen.  He would fill the tiny apartment with friends and loved ones for a holiday potluck meal for what he called “The Peasant Feast”. Before completing “Rent”, he also wrote “tick…..tick……BOOM!”  and “Suburbia”.

During the “Rent” preview preparations he became sick for days.  After being misdiagnosed as food poisoning and the flu, Jonathan Larson died on January 25, 1996, from an aortic aneurysm caused by Marfan’s Syndrome.  “Rent” was scheduled for its off-Broadway opening that evening. For his work on “Rent”, Larson was posthumously awarded the Pulitzer Prize for Drama, the Tony Awards for Best Musical, Best Book of a Musical, and Best Original Score; the Drama Desk Award for Outstanding Book of a Musical, the Drama Desk Award for Outstanding Music, and the Drama Desk Award for Outstanding Lyrics; the New York Drama Critics Circle Award for Best Musical; the Outer Critics Circle Award for Best Musical in the Off-Broadway category; and three Obie Awards for Outstanding Book, Outstanding Lyrics and Outstanding Music.

As you wander on through life, Bud,
Whatever be your goal
Keep your eye upon the donut
And not upon the hole.

Al Larson, father of Jonathan
