DIRECTING IN THE GREEK NOTES

SET CONSTRUCTION, USE OF SPACE, & DRAG-OUT

As part of the Cranbrook Educational Campus, we work in partnership with Cranbrook to use the outdoor Greek Theatre. We are unable to erect sets outdoors until after the Cranbrook Art Academy Graduation which falls on the Friday of Mothers Day Weekend. Set pieces are built indoors and then taken outside when we “officially” take over the space. This is referred to as DRAG-OUT.

For rehearsal purposes, the chairs are removed from the indoor pavilion floor to provide larger space for blocking and simulate the size of the Greek Stage. If it is warm enough, rehearsals can occur outside prior to Drag-out, but no sets are allowed to be left outside before the Drag-out date.

There is no fly space at the Greek, so please keep that in mind with any set design.

There is a false wooden floor and thrust that can be put down. That is up to the discretion of the director, but certainly makes sense for shows that are dance-heavy or involve tap dancing.

If choosing the Greek theatre for a fall slot, note that rehearsals will need to be held off-site until mid-August, and off-site location will need to be arranged by the director. Please note that there will not be space for set pieces until mid-August as well.

TECHNICAL AND LIGHTING CONSIDERATIONS

As it is June in Michigan, it does not get dark until 930p---usually the start of the second act of most musicals. That can greatly hamper the lighting at the beginning of the show and diminish the ability to do any special effects of projections. Please keep that in mind with any proposal for the Greek.

The Fall Greek Theatre show will have a 7:30pm start time.
